It takes 40 minutes by Seaplane to reach Velavaru Island Resort. Natives called it "Turtle Island". Thus, "velaa" in the Maldivian context (Dhivehi) means "turtle". The lush vegetation, tall palm trees, white sandy beach, and beautiful lagoon of Velavaru make it irresistible for anyone wanted to enjoy unspoiled natural scenery.

Remote and peaceful, beautifully built and sensitively managed. Add excellent food to the positive side and no house reef for snorkeling to the downside and you have the essence of Velavaru.

The island boasts that many turtles were seen while constructing the resort. Most of them have gone now, but a plan is in place to help those that return to lay eggs. As a tribute, every roof on the resort is shaped like a turtle shell.

The most prominent turtle shell-roof of all belongs to the dive base. There is no smarter dive centre building in the country. Ocean Pro run it admirably. Put your equipment in a basket and leave the rest to the team. As to the diving itself, it is biased towards the many local channels and thilas. The current can be strong, but then, the stronger the current the more likely you are to see the big fish. Sharks and rays are common and so too, encouragingly, are living corals.

With just one other resort on the atoll (Vilu Reef), one resort to the north (FILITHEYO Island) and none to the south, the dive sites are pretty much untouched. Hellomaldives.com divers, said that they have seen dolphins crossing the channel which moved in from the open sea, while they came-back from an afternoon dive.

House reef is too far to get to comfortably and anyway the coral emerges from the water at low tide and there are no channels cut through to the edge. To counter this drawback, there are two, free boat trips to one of three local spots, everyday.

The beach is very good, generally wide, white and soft with some odd bit of erosion and sand pumping (which is less fine sand from the lagoon). Not every room has direct access to the beach, some are tucked behind, however when you process the reservation with us we always ensure to get you a room with easy access to the beach.

The atmosphere at Velavaru is peace, quite and comfortable. There are no specific evening entertainments here. Though some guests at times get-together and enjoys the evening. Velavaru has a multinational environment, though in the high season Italians are more crowded - this again depends on how the contracts are signed-up with the tour operators for each season.

The food is exceptional, Many resort buffets can be confidentially predicted, but "hellomaldives.com eye-for-travelers" couldn't do it over here. Pan fried fish ofcourse, but with shrimp butter sauce? Pasta with chickpeas, roulade of duck with orange sauce. Some of hellomaldives.com guests criticizes of the minimum meal plan - which is Full Board. You can't get Half Board here. Further a better option is available which Full Board with Beverages. And a choice for All-Inclusive is also available.

There are 84 rooms (66 Superior Rooms + 18 Deluxe Rooms). The DeLuxe Rooms are slightly bigger and are individual bungalows, rather than semi-detached (Superior Rooms). DeLuxe Rooms are round in shape with a handsome look and well-finished.

If you are looking for a get-away, there's an inhabited island which is about 48 minute (Motor Boat) ride, with bottomless white sand - you know like talcum powder. And we bet you'll want to come back to Velavaru.
