Maldives has
99% sea with
1% land |
|
In a country
where there
is more sea
than dry
land, one
cannot
survive
without sea
transport.
The most
common form
of transport
is a vessel
known as
dhoni.
These diesel
engine-powered
boats are
the cheapest
and most
commonly
available
mode of
transport in
the country.
For long
distance
trips to the
outer
atolls, a
larger form
of this
vessel is
used.
Dhoni
also come in
modified
states and
are used for
the island
cruises
offered by
local tour
operators. |

Dhoni |
|
This
is the most widespread vessel of
transport found in Maldives.
Developed and perfected over
centuries to conquer the seas, the
dhoni is based on the craftsmanship,
ingenuity and the art of the
carpenter- skills passed from one
generation to the next. Steered by
rudder with the helmsman’s legs,
dhonis were traditionally fitted
with sails, but over the last few
years most have been motorized. A
sail may be used to take advantage
of a good breeze on longer journeys.
Initially used for fishing, dhonis
now also serve as dive boats,
interisland transports and water
taxis between Male’ and the airport. |

Fishing
Boats |
|
The
fishing dhoni is the traditional
all-purpose vessel in Maldives.
Although dhonis have sails, most are
also powered by engines. They are
used mainly within the sheltered
waters of each atoll. Travel through
the open sea from one atoll to
another is usually by larger,
square-shaped wooden cargo boats.
Maldives has an extensive fishing
fleet of boats built domestically of
coconut wood, each of which can
carry about twelve persons. Today,
most of the boats are mechanized
which in return has resulted in
doubling the fishing catch. |

Safari Boats
for
DIVING |
|
More
than 90 registered safari boats
(live-aboards) operate in Maldives.
While some simply offer relaxing
sightseeing cruises, all these
vessels offer scuba diving. Some may
however combine a dive cruise with
other activities such as fishing.
Many of the smaller vessels are only
available for private charters. |

Most
vessels operate out of Male’ though
with advance planning its possible
to fly to a distant tourist atoll
and meet the boat there, saving many
hours of everyday cruising time. |

The
quality of the vessel, the service
and amenities are often linked to
the price of a cruise. The majority
of vessels lack air conditioning,
relying instead on natural airflow
through the cabins. Meals are often
served outside, though most boats
have dining rooms for rainy days. |

Few
boats offer underwater camera
rentals, but you may be able to rent
one form your resort. Rental scuba
gear is limited, so it’s best to
contact the associated resort in
advance to reserve all necessary
items |
